The Most Challenging Exterior Painting Surface of All

Saturday, October 31st, 2015

A-BeforeWe are often asked what is the most challenging surface of home exteriors for painting contractors. Hands down, it’s brick.

Why? Brick is a surface that is normally not expected to be painted. But if the brick is old and worn, a fresh coat of paint makes the house look a lot more sleek and modern.

Painting contractors have take into account the two components of brick as well as mortar. Both are porous. Without a good primer, they could absorb paint like a sponge, causing an uneven, blotchy appearance. As brick ages, it gets a salt buildup on the surface. As mortar ages, its pH may change and make it harder for paint to adhere properly. The home may require an acid wash first to remove these problems. It takes a true professional painting contractor to masterfully cover brick.

Also, the porous quality of brick allows it to absorb a fair amount of moisture. So painting contractors must first make sure the brick is completely dry before painting. Rhino Shield painters also puts down a primer vapor barrier coating before applying the final durable ceramic color coat.  A_after

And that brings us to yet another challenge to consider: once applied, it’s almost impossible to remove paint from brick. Although there are difficult-to-use chemical removers, your color scheme should be chosen with the thought in mind that this is going to be permanent. And indeed, Rhino Shield ceramic paint is durable enough to keep the finish looking like new for 25 years or more. You’ll never have to paint again.
